There are many different designs of martingale but all share one common feature; to assist in the control of the horses head carriage.

Breastplates are used primarily for preventing the saddle form sliding back, but are also used as a piece of safety wear.  If the girth or billets break it provides a vital few seconds allowing the rider to stop the horse before the saddle slides back too far.
